Saddleseat Show Guidelines

Saddleseat riding is the oldest and most genteel seat of riding. It is a refined, exacting style in which exquisite horsemanship is paramount. Riders must be balanced, and quietly working in tandem with their horse to produce a picture of glamorous precision and athleticism. Many different breeds of horses are ridden in the Saddleseat style, most notably the regal American Saddlebred, on display during the 2 pm performance.

Academy Classes are held during American Saddlebred Horse Shows. Any breed of horse may show in these classes, however, as long as they are “school” horses. This means a horse that teaches lessons to beginner riders in a riding academy setting. To be qualified as an Academy rider or driver, a person must be a beginner to the show ring, and cannot have shown a show horse wearing a full riding habit. If an Academy Rider has ever shown in an Academy Class at the Walk, Trot and Canter, then that person may not show in Walk and Trot classes again.

Accepted attire for Academy riders – Neatness is paramount. Riders should wear traditional English Jodhpur pants and boots, and a neatly tucked in shirt. Helmets are mandatory for all ages! Academy riders may also show in a show vest, show shirt, tie and gloves. But for this show, it is not mandatory. The lack of a show vest, shirt and tie WILL NOT be penalized by the judge for today’s Academy classes.

Instructors and trainers please note:

  • On your entry blanks, please note whether your rider is a Beginner, and Intermediate, or an Advanced Academy rider.
  • ALSO PUT THE RIDER’s AGE!  If a class is split due to its size, we want to group riders with similar skills together.
  • Negative Coggins are required for all Academy and Performance Horses
  • Plan to show off your trailer. Stalls are not available.
  • ASAC Academy Rules will apply
